The embedded gateway is really easy to set up. The Apex external listener, perhaps deployed to Glassfish, is more of a hassle. I'm not considering the Apache-plus-modplsql option at the moment, though Apache will be needed on the DMZ.
From the DBA's point of view, the embedded gateway does sometimes have performance issues, possibly due to the shared configuration. From the developer's point of view, is there any preference?

Thank you for any insight.

I'm most probably not the one who should be responsible for a decision you make (because there are just 2 Apex developers over here, with up to puny 10-20 concurrent users) so, as you guess, any option we choose doesn't make much difference.

Anyway: I've used embedded gateway previously (Apex 3.2 was my first version); now we're on Apache HTTP Server with mod_plsql (Apex 4.1 and 4.2).

I didn't notice any difference but, as I said, my experience is close to no experience.

Thanks for getting back to me, LF. I guess no-one has any strong opinions.

I'm having real problems with Apex listener 2.0.1 (released March 5, would you believe), just hit a bug that MOS says is fixed in 2.0.2. Problem is, 2.0.2 doesn't exist yet.

Problem was bug number 16461737. Why do you ask?

The most common comments on https://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=137 , are that EGP is difficult to trace issues with as it's pretty much a black box, and not really suitable for "production" sites (because it's only designed to have basic functionality). I've been using EGP for years without issue.
